"The world is a dangerous place,
not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on
and do nothing."
-Albert Einstein
The Shelter Hotline program is an integral part of the continuum of care for the homeless in the District of Columbia offering services seven days a week, including year-round transportation, outreach, and referral services.
During the winter months, November 1 to March 31, the program provides services 7 days a week, 24 hours a day to homeless adults and families and offers emergency transportation to shelters, access to warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, and food items when available. We are committed to providing comfort and to preventing death or injuries caused by freezing temperatures during the hypothermia season.
During warmer months, from April 1 to October 31, the Shelter Hotline continues to provide emergency transportation to shelters to anyone who needs it, and when temperatures are excessively high, homeless persons are provided transportation to cooling stations where they receive cold drinks and clothing to prevent heat related illnesses.
